The Price of Fame

Updated: Dec 13, 2020

While most of us fantasize about the possibility of fame and all its perks, we often omit the undesirable consequences that come with the dream. Of those consequences, loss of privacy and saying goodbye to normal everyday life are the biggest deterrents for me. The gift of privacy is one we consistently take for granted. When dealing with the trials of life, despite their magnitude, most of us have the privilege on what information, if any to share with those around us. However, being a celebrity that luxury no longer exist. Everything one does is potentially a story and therefore subject to being exposed to the public. Even in death, the privacy of a celebrity is gone. For example, after the fatal helicopter crash of basketball superstar, Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna, TMZ broke the news of their deaths before their family was even notified. The complete lack of respect shown by TMZ has caused irreversible trauma for the Bryant family.

Secondly, never experiencing normal everyday life again is an apprehension I have toward fame. Being able to complete mundane task without harassment or fan requests would be no more if I reached celebrity status. Having the time to even do such tasks would be minimal. Saying goodbye to everyday life would be both a blessing and a curse. Having someone complete my daily errands and responsibilities would seem like a dream at first, but as all good things, it would come to an end. I would miss being able to casually walk around the grocery store or exercise without worrying about an infinite number of disturbances. Fame brings many benefits that everyday people can only dream of, but at what cost is it worth it to belong to the world of entertainment?
